I’ve been a doula for over 20 years, and I’ve had the privilege of talking with hundreds of families who were in exactly this position. Here is what I wish someone had told them.
Why Certification Matters
Not everyone who calls themselves a doula has received formal training. In Florida, doulas are not state-licensed, which means anyone can technically offer doula services without any certification, training, or experience. That matters — a lot.
When you’re evaluating a doula, look for recognized certification from a reputable training organization. I am certified through ProDoula, one of the most respected doula training programs in the country. ProDoula-certified doulas complete extensive training in birth support, postpartum care, infant feeding, grief support, and client care standards. Certification tells you that a doula has invested seriously in her education and has been held to a professional standard.
Ask any doula you consider: What is your certification, and what organization certified you? How many births have you attended? Do you carry liability insurance? These are basic questions, and a good doula will answer them directly and without defensiveness.
Questions to Ask Before You Hire
Beyond credentials, you want to understand how a doula actually works. Some questions that reveal a lot:
What does your backup plan look like? Every doula should have a clear, established plan for what happens if she is ill, already with another client, or unavailable when you go into labor. I maintain my own backup system — but you deserve to know exactly what it is before you sign a contract.
Have you supported a birth at my hospital or birth center? Familiarity with your birth location matters. A doula who has worked at your hospital knows the staff culture, the policies, and how to navigate the space effectively. That experience translates into smoother advocacy for you in the moments that count.
What is your philosophy around birth? Be thoughtful about any doula who has a rigid agenda — one who steers clients away from epidurals regardless of their desires, or who has strong opinions about how birth “should” go. A good doula supports your choices, not her own. Her job is to walk the path you choose, not to lead you down hers.
How do you support partners? The best birth experiences tend to include partners who feel empowered and involved. Ask how your doula engages your support person — both prenatally and during labor. Partner preparation is a meaningful part of what a skilled doula provides.
What a Doula Consultation Should Feel Like
A good doula consultation feels like a conversation, not a sales pitch. You should leave feeling more clear, more calm, and more confident — not pressured, not overwhelmed, and not like you just sat through a presentation designed to close a deal.
Pay attention to how you feel in her presence. Does she listen more than she talks? Does she ask about your specific hopes, fears, and circumstances? Does she make room for the things you’re anxious about without minimizing them? Does she seem genuinely curious about you?
A doula who makes you feel seen in a 20-minute consultation is a doula who will make you feel seen in labor. Trust that signal.
Red Flags to Watch For
A few things that should give you pause:
- A doula who cannot clearly explain her backup plan
- Dismissiveness toward medicated birth, hospital birth, or your care team
- Pressure to commit before you have time to think
- Speaking negatively about local OBs, midwives, or hospitals
- Inability to produce evidence of certification or insurance when asked
- A consultation where she does most of the talking and asks few questions about you
None of these individually makes someone a bad person — but they are signals that the fit may not be right, and the fit matters enormously in birth work.
Fit Matters as Much as Credentials
Here is what I tell every family I speak with: the right doula for you is the one you feel safe with. Credentials narrow the field. Chemistry closes the deal.
You will be at your most open, your most raw, your most human in that birth space. Labor strips away everything performative. The person beside you needs to have earned your trust — not just with a certificate, but with the way she listens to you right now, in the most ordinary moments of your conversation.
You should leave your consultation feeling like this person gets it. Gets you. Gets what you’re hoping for and what you’re afraid of. That feeling is not a small thing. It is, in many ways, the whole thing.
