What a Birth Doula Actually Does

A birth doula is not your midwife and she is not your OB. She is something different — a steady, trained presence by your side through every hour of labor and delivery.

While your medical team focuses on clinical care, your doula focuses entirely on you. Amber is there to help you move through contractions, breathe with intention, advocate for your birth preferences, and stay grounded in moments that can feel overwhelming. She supports your partner so neither of you is ever alone in that room.

Research consistently shows that continuous doula support is associated with shorter labors, lower rates of cesarean birth, and higher satisfaction with the birth experience — regardless of whether an epidural is used. But beyond the statistics, what Amber offers is something harder to measure: the feeling that you are genuinely held.

She arrives when you need her. She stays. She doesn’t leave at the end of a shift. That consistency is not incidental — it is the heart of what she does.

What Working With Amber Looks Like

From the weeks before your due date to the first hours of your baby’s life — here is what Amber brings to your birth experience.

Prenatal Preparation

Two in-depth prenatal visits to build your personalized birth plan, talk through your hopes and concerns, and prepare you mentally, emotionally, and practically for the work ahead. You will not walk into labor guessing — you will walk in ready.

Continuous Labor Support

Labor doesn’t keep business hours — and neither does Amber. On call 24/7 from 37 weeks, she arrives when contractions begin and stays by your side through every wave, every decision, and every moment leading to delivery. No shift changes. No one new walking in when things get intense.

Partner Coaching

Your partner wants to show up for you — Amber makes sure they know how. From a dedicated prenatal coaching session through the birth itself, she guides your partner so they feel capable, calm, and useful in the room. You will both feel supported throughout.

Golden Hour & Beyond

After your baby arrives, Amber stays. She supports your first feeding, skin-to-skin bonding, and the sacred, tender moments immediately after birth. She also provides a follow-up postpartum home visit and four weeks of continued phone and text support as you settle into life with your new baby.

Birth Doula Support Is For You If…

You do not have to be planning a natural birth, a home birth, or any particular kind of birth to benefit from a doula. Amber’s support meets you exactly where you are.

You are a first-time mother who wants to feel genuinely prepared — not just informed, but ready.

You are planning an epidural and still want consistent emotional support and someone advocating for your preferences.

You have a partner who is nervous and wants guidance on how to truly show up during labor.

You want one consistent presence through labor — not a rotating nursing staff who has never met you before.

You are a mother of color who wants an advocate in the room who will ensure your voice is heard and respected.

You simply want to feel safe, heard, and genuinely held through one of the most significant experiences of your life.

Planning a VBAC?

Vaginal birth after cesarean requires a different kind of support — one that holds space for the fear, the history, and the hope. With approximately 20 VBACs supported, Amber brings deep, specialized experience to VBAC families across South Florida. She understands the emotional weight of this decision and the unique needs of VBAC labor, and she will walk that path with you every step of the way.

In Their Own Words

From the very beginning, she brought a calm confidence that made me feel safe, informed, and truly supported. She never pushed, never judged — she simply met me exactly where I was and helped me believe in what my body was capable of, even in moments when I doubted it myself. There’s something incredibly powerful about having someone beside you who doesn’t just support you, but truly sees you. In my most vulnerable moments, she was my calm, my anchor, my steady reassurance that I wasn’t alone. My VBAC wasn’t just a physical experience — it was emotional, healing, and transformative, and Amber played a huge role in that.

During my labor, I needed someone to remind me to breathe, speak life over me, and help me stay anchored in peace. Amber did exactly that. She carried such a calm, gentle presence and continually encouraged me with truth and positivity. She was also an incredible support to my husband — guiding him, caring for him, and stepping in whenever he needed a moment so I was never without support. When decisions arose, Amber helped us slow down, ask questions, and understand our options with wisdom and confidence. Because of her support, I had a beautiful and positive birth experience.

Questions About
Birth Doula Support

What does a birth doula do during labor?

A birth doula provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support from the start of active labor through the moments after birth. Amber helps you breathe through contractions, guides your partner, communicates your preferences to your care team, and remains by your side throughout — no shift changes, no substitutes. She is focused entirely on you, while your medical team manages clinical care.

Do I need a birth doula if I am planning an epidural?

Absolutely. Labor involves so much more than pain management — decisions, communication, emotional support, partner involvement, and the hours leading up to and after birth. Amber’s presence is valuable and meaningful no matter how you plan to birth. Many of her clients have epidurals, and they consistently say her support made all the difference.

Will my birth doula stay with me the entire time I am in labor?

Yes. When you choose Hummingbird, there are no shift changes and no substitutes. Amber stays with you from the time she arrives through delivery and the golden hour after birth. That consistency is not a small thing — it is central to what makes doula support so valuable.

How far in advance should I book a birth doula?

Amber recommends booking between 12 and 28 weeks to ensure she is available around your due date. Reach out as early as you can — spots are limited and fill quickly. If you are further along, it is still worth reaching out. If she has availability, she will take great care of you.

Are birth doula services FSA or HSA eligible?

Doula services may be eligible for reimbursement through your FSA or HSA. Amber provides documentation and invoices with her NPI number to support your claim. We recommend confirming eligibility with your plan administrator, as coverage varies by plan. Many clients successfully use their FSA/HSA funds to cover all or part of their package.
